55 million years ago.
in the Cenozoic era, there lived the Pakicetus on Earth.
This wolf-like animal is actually an ancestor of modern whales that lived on land.
As a result, it gradually evolved into fish-like forms known as Basilosaurus.
The fins gradually grew larger, and Basilosaurus evolved into Dorudon.
And starting from around 5 million years ago,
they evolved into the forms that resemble today's whales.
Whales are at both the beginning and the end of the carbon pump cycle.
While alive, they provide a tremendous amount of waste that nourishes phytoplankton. When they die, they trap a vast amount of carbon accumulated through the food chain in their bodies and sink to the ocean floor, effectively sequestering the carbon.
This phenomenon is called "whale fall".
